American Dream By John Steinbeck The Dream of the American Dream John Steinbeck, in his essay America and Americans, uses many contradictions to explain his views on the American Dream. I have witnessed and experienced many of these contradictions in my life. Through my experiences, I have learned to believe that the American dream is no more than just a dream. One of the first contradictions Steinbeck uses that I have personally experienced is, We are alert, curious, hopeful, and we take more drugs designed to make us unaware than any other people. This quote almost perfectly describes one of my cousins. She at one time was very bright and intelligent. In fact, she had over a 4.0 grade point average through her fist two years of high school. However, she began taking drugs and progressively followed a downhill track until she was barely even able to think at all. I do not think that a girl almost killing herself and ending up as a vegetable is part of the American Dream. Another example of a contradiction Steinbeck uses in his essay that I have personally witnessed is, We spend our lives in motor cars, yet most of us - a great many of us at least - do not know enough about a car to look in the gas tank when the motor fails. I observed this when my grandma's car broke down once. She had her car towed to the mechanic, and after about a week of it being examined, the mechanic called my grandma and told her that the only problem with the car was that it was out of gas. If we were living the American dream, would my grandma be so lazy as to have her car stop running and never look at the gas gauge? Would she have spent hundreds of dollars getting her car fixed when five dollars would have been suitable for gas? The answer to both questions is no. One final contradiction that Steinbeck uses in his essay that I have personally witnessed is, In no country are more seeds and plants and equipment purchased, and less vegetables and flowers raised. It seems like every other week my neighbor two houses down brings home bags of seeds for plants, trees, fruits, and vegetables, yet their back yard still looks like all they plant are weeds. They even hire landscapers to come and work on their yard. However, two weeks later the yard looks like as though it has never been touched. My neighbors have great ideas, but they never finish them. Spending a mere fortune and getting nothing but what you started with is not a part of the American dream. To most, the American dream is seen as no more than a dream. That is my belief on the prestigious dream that attracts many to this country also. I do not believe that the dream is really possible with people as lazy as they are, and that is why it is called a dream. However, poem written by William Word worth has an edge over his sister’s prose, thanks to his differentiated writing style. She wrote in her prose, â€Å"tossed and reeled and danced and seemed as if they verily laughed, whereas on the other hand, William Wordsworth, using almost the same expressions to describe the beauty of the daffodils stated in his poem, flowers â€Å"fluttering and dancing in the breeze.† The description of the flowers wrote by the two poets are almost the same, but the way they can be interpreted are different. Where on one side William starts off the poem by stating the eloquence of the daffodils and comes to a beautiful end where he delightfully remembers the walk he once had with his sibling, on the other hand Dorothy states how the walks are the occurrences of just some days where the mere observations of the exquisite scenery takes place. In the prose of Tintern Abbey , Dorothy states, â€Å"The Bay’s were stormy and we heard the waves at different distances and in middle of the water like the sea†, whereas the lines written by William Wordsworth are well elaborated ones where he writes, â€Å"The waves beside the [flowers] dan ced; but they outdid the sparkling waves in glee.† The way both the writers made the ending lines are quite different as well, where each added a different finishing touch to the poem. Dorothy in Tintern Abbey states that the tiring end comes to a good end with the family supper and the thirst quenching water and rum. Whereas if we pay attention to William Wordsworth’s work, he ends the poem with a deeper meaning stating the inner satisfaction and the gratitude that he got from the walk he had with his sibling, â€Å"...heart with pleasure fills and dances with the daffodils.† When you start reading Wordsworth’s poems, you will notice that there in no depth in the feelings, whereas if you take in to consideration how he had put the beautiful effects the nature had on the human inner mind, and how encompassed with the beauty of nature, the reader will find more meaning attached to it. It was like Wordsworth’s mind had slipped into a meditation which helped him escape from the worries and the thoughts that he had indulged himself into. When he compared himself to a cloud it represented that this walk in to the exquisiteness of the nature had helped him in getting light, as light as a cloud. The Similarities Between Victor And The Monster English Literature Essay Throughout the development of English literature there are often times when rival enemies inadvertently share striking similarities between one another, a situation clearly analyzed between Victor and the Monster in Mary Shelleys  captivating novel, Frankenstein. The vivid similarities between the two tragic characters are driven by their dreary isolation from the secluded world, which refuses to accept those who are different into society, by hatred, and most importantly by the absence of motherly figures in both Victors and the Monsters lives. As Victor had stated, I seemed to have lost all soul or sensation but for this one pursuit. (Shelley, 38) as he described that he lost all touch with the world due to his work. Perhaps even the old saying like father, like son can inevitably describe the flawless resemblances between the two seemingly lost characters. However, regardless of even some of the slight differences the two may portray, when comparing their experiences and human-l ike actions, it is clear that their similarities are undoubtedly proven and reflected upon throughout the novel. The ironic isolation with the rest of the world that the two characters undergo plays a major role in contributing to their powerful comparison. Both figures seem to strongly despise one another yet strangely enough, they both also despise themselves for their wrong and disastrous actions. The isolation began with Victors decision to separate himself from the rest of society when he become enthralled with his scientific research and experiments. And the same feelings which made me neglect the scenes around me caused me also to forget those friends who were so many miles absent, and whom I had not seen for so long a time. (Shelley, 40) As for the Monster, he detaches himself and becomes a frantic outsider when he realizes his appearance only drives those who he cares for most, further away from him. However, the Monsters isolation is based more on appearance rather than his decisions and work, for his deformed structure and frightening face are his greatest agonies. When I looked arou nd I saw and heard of none like me. Was I, a Monster, a blot upon the earth from which all men fled and whom all men disowned? (Shelley, 98) Lastly, looking past the text one can see that both characters desire to play their own cards on life, taking it away and bringing it back whenever they want. Victor is prepared to bring life to the dead while the Monster on the opposite hand, is willing to take away life from the living out of rage and misfortune. Life and death appeared to me ideal bounds, which I should first break through, and pour a torrent of light into our dark world. (Shelley, 37) In a tragic twist, both of these deprived characters have been isolated, abandoned, and have simply became outcasts of present society.   Family ties and vengefulness are truly one of the most significant aspects affecting the resemblance of both Victor and the Monster. At a young age, Frankenstein was left without his mother after her death and as a result, he never got to experience the true feelings of a mothers warm touch and love. She died calmlyit is so long before the mind can persuade itself that she whom we saw every day and whose every existence appeared a part of our own can have departed forever and the sound of a voice so familiar and dear to the ear can be hushed, never more to be heard. (Shelley, 29) Just like Victor, in his own time, the Monster never got to experience not only the love of a mother but the love of a father as well. Without these two feelings the Monster was never able to understand what happiness might have truly meant. As a result, the lack of these feelings in their lives caused the two to be driven with more rage then patience and love. Another likeness between Victor and the Monster is them both being very resentful. The Monster shows his dark-side when he decides to demolish the cottagers house, the only thing that expressed in him his affectionate human-like feelings. Moreover, Victor shows the same anger when he refuses and rejects the attempt to connect and understand the life of his creation. Perhaps it truly was the lack of love from ones mother and that from both of ones parents that caused the similarities in loneliness, anger and strive for revenge between the two main characters. Victor and his creation are two characters which despite of their differences still resemble a strong and vivid connection. These driven characters thrive for the same goals, feed of similar pain, and feel the same loneliness, remorse and isolation as one another. These similarities are so extreme that it is for no reason that most of the world recognizes the creature by the name of Frankenstein himself. Isolated by society, abandoned by their childhood figures, and driven by rage, Victor and the Monster may be more alike than we can simply prove.

In this report, I will discuss the basic geographic features of Iraq, and other various important features such as mineral wealth, vegetation, ect.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Iraq's total area is 271,128 square miles (just slightly more than twice the size of Idaho). It's capital, Baghdad, is located at 33.20 north longitude, 44.24 east latitude. It's boundaries are 2,222 miles long. With 906 miles bordering Iran, 83 miles bordering Jordan, 149 miles bordering Kuwait, 502 miles bordering Saudi Arabia, 376 miles bordering Turkey, and a coastline 36 miles long. The terrain in Iraq is mostly broad plains, with reedy marshes in the southeast, mountains along toe borders with Iran and Turkey.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The Climate in Iraq is most desert, with mild to cool winters and dry, hot cloudless summers. The northernmost regions along Iranian and Turkish borders experience cold winters and occasional heavy snows. On June 17, 1992, the UN Security council reaffirmed the finality of the Boundary Demarcation Commission's decisions.
